Meet Hera! Hera had a heartbreaking start, but her luck has turned around! Hera was dumped at a shelter in North Carolina with a severely broken leg - the fractured bone was actually sticking out of her leg. We were absolutely horrified to learn that this injury had happened 2 WEEKS prior to her being brought by her owners to the shelter. In those two weeks they did not take her for any medical care whatsoever. We cannot imagine the excrutiating pain she must have been in. DPR was contacted, and she was immediately seen by the shelter vets - due to the nature of the open wound and injury, severe infection had set in and her leg could not be saved. Due to the severity of the fracture, it's unlikely they would have been able to save the leg even if she was brought in immediately, but it certainly would have saved 2 weeks of pain and suffering. Despite the cruelty she has endured, Hera is a very sweet kitten! She loves being pet and cuddled. She is about 5 months old now, and her wound is all healed up and the hair is even starting to grow back. She learned very quickly and easily how to navigate the world with 3 legs. She is no longer in pain, and is a very happy sweet kitten and gets around just fine! She is wonderful with all the other cats she is being fostered with. She is calm and laid back and enjoys lounging on the comfy cat beds. Of all the cats who deserve to be extra-pampered, it is defintely Hera!

This cat is spayed, microchipped, tested negative for FIV and Leukemia and is up to date on all age-appropriate vaccinations.

This website is updated daily.  If the animal you are interested in adopting is listed as "available for adoption", that means the animal is still in DPR's care.

*Please note - we do not do in-person meet and greets. Potential adopters can speak to the cats foster mom on the phone or do a meeting on Zoom or Facetime if desired to virtually meet the cat. You can pick your kitty up "curb side". Cats can be returned with a full refund for up to one week. *

DPR cats receive the following medical care prior to adoption:

Initial vet visit
Spay or neuter (if cat is 6 months or older)
Rabies vaccination (if cat is 6 months or older)
Distemper vaccination
SNAP testing for FIV, Leukemia and heart worm
Broad spectrum dewormers
Monthly flea/tick preventative
Ear mite preventative
The above is standard for ALL cats in our care. But many cats we rescue also require some additional TLC prior to adoption, such as antibiotics, eye ointments, wound care, fungal treatment, x-rays, or various surgeries.  We are an all-volunteer 501(c)3 charity. The adoption fee helps to offset our standard and non-standard vet bills.
