Learn more about the Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie.
Sophie was confiscated by the Berks County SPCA because she lived in a home with 29 other dogs who were in very bad shape. She had never been outside and had very little socialization with people. She came to us very scared and confused. Since arriving she has blossomed into a sweet little girl but is still hesitant with new people. She is a very loving girl and enjoys the company of other dogs. She is housetrained and crate trained. She is cautious around new people but warms up to them in a short time. Though she spent her entire life in a small home crowded with dogs and little contact with people she is really showing great progress. She greets her foster mom at the door with tail wags and jumps of joy. Though she is a tiny little thing she is very food motivated and at dinner time she practically does flips in the air waiting for her bowl to be put down. She has become very affectionate and is never far from her foster mom's side. Due to the frantic situation when she was pulled from her original home she is still very scared of being on a leash. We are working on this with her but she will need to go to a home with a fenced in yard. She has been spayed, teeth cleaned, heartworm negative, lyme negative and up to date on all her shots. Sophie would do best in a home with another dog. She seems to follows the lead of the other dogs in her foster home and shows much more confidence with people after she see's the other dogs approach visitors. Her adopters must understand that it will take time for her to adjust to a new home and become comfortable. Because it will take Sophie time to adjust to a new home and a new family we prefer a home without small children. If you are interested in meeting Sophie, please submit an adoption application and include your understanding of the special introduction into your home she will need.
