This is a courtesy posting for Maui. If you are interested in meeting him, please submit an adoption application and it will be forwarded to his owner who has written the information about Maui below. About Maui: We adopted Maui in October 2006, when he was three months old. He has been the perfect dog. He’s fixed, well-trained, and he has all his shots. We crate-trained him, and he became house-broken very quickly, and very successfully. He views his crate as his own little private cave, even though it’s a bit too small for him now. Even though we leave the door open and give him the run of the house, he still spends a lot of time lounging in his crate. Maui is twenty months old now (he was born in July 2006). He’s energetic, but very calm and even-tempered. He loves kids and other dogs, and they love him back. With kids, he’s playful and gentle; with dogs, he can roughhouse with the best of them, but he’s still always careful not to get too rough with them, either. Maui has always displayed good manners, sensitivity, obedience, eagerness to please, and a strong desire to socialize. He’ll bark when he hears the neighbors’ dogs barking, because he likes to be part of the action. He tries hard to muffle it when you tell him to keep it down, which in itself can be quite amusing. Our intentions for Maui when we adopted him were for him to be a part of our new, happy family of two newlyweds and my wife’s older dog, in the big house with a yard that we had just purchased. Things did not work out as planned, and Maui has ended up with an older dog and a widower who are both too grief-stricken to give him the attention he deserves. He has spring fever, and the border collie in him has the strong desire to frolic with the neighborhood kids and dogs. He deserves to have that kind of life. Maui’s perfect world would be filled with the companionship of a stable family with a couple of energetic kids, and preferably other dogs nearby with whom he can play from time to time. He’s a keeper, and as he matures he will become a low-key and contented house dog. Maui sheds. That’s his one and only down-side, if it can even be considered that. Most dogs with nice coats shed. He just needs (and loves) to be brushed as frequently as possible, and then it’s not a problem. He’s also developed a touch of anxiety because of the somber atmosphere of late, and because he hasn’t gotten out as much as he should. When he gets anxious, he finds napkins and tissues to chew up, and he started to nibble on the edge of an area rug one day. The worst he’s done was to drag blankets throughout the house and leave them laying around — nothing serious. He’s not destructive by nature, but he does have the tendency to find things to chew on when he’s anxious. It’s notable that he picks things he thinks are relatively innocuous chew-things (I’m sure a dog would have a different perspective on the relative importance of an area rug). Maui is available for immediate adoption. It’s important to me to get him into the right home environment as soon as possible for the sake of his happiness and well-being. I have a feeling he’ll adjust quickly and well to the right home. More about MauiGood with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids
