10/30/13 Update:   After only a few weeks, Sasha is like a different dog!  She has gained 13 lbs. and has more energy than ever.  She is now acting like a normal dog - she plays ball, plays chase with her foster lab brother, Jimi, and enjoys long walks (on a loose leash!)  Several times per day she practices taking treats VERY gently along with the other dogs in the house, and has learned that she will get enough to eat but she must remain seated and wait her turn.  She is happy, happy, happy!  Her tail wags constantly.  Sasha has been vet checked again, and received the all-clear on her heartworm, lyme, and ehrlichia tests.  She also had a senior blood panel done to be sure she is strong enough to withstand the general anesthesia used for spaying, and all the liver and kidney function tests are "beautiful" (vet's words!)  She is scheduled to be spayed on 11/4/13.

Initially we thought that Sasha would do best in a home without other dogs, but she has blossomed so much we now think she would be fine with doggie siblings.  She is still showing some insecurity in new situations and with new dogs, so the introduction process would need to be gradual and supervised.  But once she knows another dog, her behavior is comfortable and appropriate.
If you are looking for a loving companion who will eagerly accompany you on long walks and snuggle up to you whenever she is given permission, Sasha is the girl for you!  She is completely housetrained, will sleep in a crate but is trustworthy all night outside the crate.

Don't let the gray face fool you!  Sasha is a younger-than-she-looks spunky girl
with a sad story to tell.  Once upon a time, Sasha had an ordinary home (we
think), but her original owner left her with a neighbor while he got situated in
a new location.  He never returned.  The new owner was elderly, with numerous
hospitalizations, so she would have to find someone to care for Sasha when she
couldn't be home.  After a few months, the new owner reluctantly surrendered
Sasha to a shelter in Philly, which is where DPR found her.  These circumstances
have aged Sasha and caused her to lose weight.  She is eating several small meals a day and we will have her back to a healthy weight in no time.  At her foster home, she is a loving, happy girl who is constantly by her foster mom's side.  We see some insecurity but that is understandable with all she has been through.  The vet estimates her age at between 5 and 7 years, but her energy level suggests she is on the younger side.  Sasha is housebroken, walks beautifully on a leash, and loves attention from anyone - human family or strangers on a walk. She loves to catch the ball and does well with her foster canine siblings but is protective over her food and toys with them.  She would do best with a more submissive dog in the house.
We are looking for a stable permanent home for Sasha.  The best match would be one without another dog or one with a submissive dog.  If you are interested in being considered for Sasha please submit an application at www.DelawarePuppyRescue.org/forms
